us recruit new members! Herman Benson's letter to labor intellectuals: Dear Friends, A year ago or so I wrote an essay on intellectuals and unions which explains why our Association for Union Democracy feels so strongly that intellectuals need a strong labor movement and why the labor movement needs the support of intellectuals. This is a message that AUD has been setting forth since 1969. And it explains why I have been so encouraged by the support pro-labor intellectuals have expressed for the democratic rights of SEIU workers in California. The Association for Union Democracy is a pro-union civil liberties organization focusing on the democratic rights of union members. As citizens, we are all entitled to free speech, free press, fair elections, and due process in our country. AUD holds that as members of unions we should be entitled to similar democratic rights in our labor movement. It has been campaigning for more than 40 years to strengthen those rights. Over the years, AUD and a small band of cooperating workers' rights attorneys has fought to shape union democracy law in a way that provides more effective legal tools for union reformers. More than this, AUD helps reformers through their gritty battles, records and publicizes their stories, and gives them moral and practical assistance. In forty year's we've aided miners, steelworkers, construction workers, nurses, and teamsters (to name a few) in winning decisive victories for union democracy. (Much of this story is told in my Rebels, Reformers and Racketeers.) But we need your help! As a grassroots, non-profit organization, we depend upon individual donations for over 90% of our budget: from union activists, civil libertarians, and academics and educators like you. Can we count on you? With donation of 10 dollars, we'll send you a sampling of our many articles focusing on the relationship between intellectuals and the labor movement. For a 50 dollar tax-deductible donation, we offer a one-year subscription to Union Democracy Review plus a copy of Rebels, Reformers, and Racketeers. Sign up for a hundred dollars or more, and you will receive all of the above plus a subscription to our $100+ Club News. I hope you'll help us continue the fight for a more democratic union movement and make a pledge at www.uniondemocracy.org/donations. If you have any further questions about the Association for Union Democracy, please feel free to email me at info@union.democracy.org, or call our Brooklyn office at (718) 564 -1114. Thank you for reading and I hope to hear from you soon!
